Golf in Idyllwild

When people visit Idyllwild and comment about how much it has GROWN…I will often say….”Actually, in my opinion it has moved in the opposite direction. It used to have a public pool, a Chart House Restaurant, a Bank of America, a dime store (for those of you who remember what they were) and a golf course…in fact 3-golf courses.” Many things have been tried in Idyllwild at one time or another, but none was given a better try than the golf course.

In the early 1900’s when Idyllwild was “taking off” as a recreational area, there was a competition between local developers on the hill for who could provide the best Golf Course. By the 1920’s Claudius Emerson who had purchased the Idyllwild Inn from developers Strong and Dickinson, began to develop his vision down alongTollgate Road before you get to Idyllwild Arts. His plans were to dam Strawberry Creek to form a lake, and he did build a 9-hole golf club called Idyllwild Country Club. Strong & Dickenson competed by building a course up on Saunders Meadow Road where the Astro Camp meadow is today. They built a gorgeous clubhouse and named their course Idyllwild Golf Club. This course was later renamed the Mount San Jacinto Golf Club but by the depression, it went bust as well. Later, in the 1960’s someone again tried a golf course, this time located in the meadow off Foster Lake Roadacross the street from Buckhorn Camp. None of these courses exist today. The elegant “Club House” still exists on the Astro Camp campus as its main dining hall.

Here is a photo of the inside of the elegant Club House of the Mount San Jacinto Golf Club. It is the main dining hall at Astro Camp today. Visit it sometime if you can. It’s still beautiful!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

The Historical Society is in need of some adult volunteers who would be willing to help out with this year’s Home Tour on Saturday September 13th. No special knowledge is needed but you will need to be able to stand (or sit) in one of the homes for a 6 hour shift (with breaks, of course).

One of the benefits of volunteering, is that you will get to tour the homes on Friday without all the visitors that will attend on Saturday. We would really appreciate your help. Please contact Chris at 951-961-8403 if you are interested. Thank you.
