Town Hall: 1946 – today

In 1946, The Johnson Family gave the property at the end of Cedar Street, across the street from “The Rustic Theatre” (Silver Pines Lodge today) to the town of Idyllwild to build a Town Hall. Many people took the day off from work to help pour the foundation and the community helped for months with the build. It was dedicated on July 10, 1947. Notice the year of the vehicles in the photo and if you look close, you can see the end of the “Theatre” sign on the building in the background. Town Hall existed for 72 years under the ownership of the Chamber of Commerce, the only town organization able to take title to the building and manage it. Expenses were covered, partly by the $35 parcel fee designated for Idylwild residents, and partly by income procured from rental of the building. Because Pine Cove residents aren’t in the CSA that gets charged $35 a year on their property taxes, property owners in Pine Cove do not contribute to the tax base that helps maintain Town Hall, but they get the use of it none-the-less. An attempt was made almost 20 years ago to add Pine Cove residents to CSA 36, but it lost in the election by 8 votes.

In 2013, due to a lawsuit brought against the Chamber of Commerce over the existing “Harmony Tree Monument”, rather than fight the lawsuit, the Chamber of Commerce dissolved and has not existed since. The ownership of Town Hall reverted BACK to the Johnson Family. With many of the original family members now deceased, the family decided to put Town Hall on the open real estate market. It was looked at by different organizations including churches. But two couples came to the rescue….Dave & Loie Butterfield, and Tom & Dorothy Hawthorne, both part-timers on the hill. Together they purchased Town Hall and commenced a year and a half long renovation project. The Butterfield’s contribution far exceeded the Hawthorne’s, but both couples got credit on the plaque that now adorns the front of the building. When the building was finished, it was deeded BACK to the community, now in the name of ICC (Idyllwild Community Center) which is still one of the only organizations able to hold title to the building and manage and maintain it. ICC still struggles with the ongoing $35 parcel fee from CSA 36 that still, only Idyllwild property owners pay, but they do the best they can with those funds and funds from renting out the building and from ongoing program rentals. Some people believe there is a magic “Town Fairy” that pays the bills at Town Hall, and maintains and manages it. But very few know the struggles that ICC goes through to keep this historic building and gift going year after year. Almost 80 years later, Town Hall is still a place for community gatherings and town happenings.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
The Historical Society is in need of some adult volunteers who would be willing to help out with this year’s Home Tour on Saturday September 13th. No special knowledge is needed but you will need to be able to stand (or sit) in one of the homes for a 6 hour shift (with breaks, of course).
One of the benefits of volunteering, is that you will get to tour the homes on Friday without all the visitors that will attend on Saturday. We would really appreciate your help. Please contact Nanci at 951-659-0575if you are interested. Thank you.
