I love words…and I was thinking of the word “Crepuscular” which describes animals that are active during the twilight hours, both before sunrise and after sunset, and I wondered what other wonderful words there were for the activity times of different animals. So I looked them up. I hope you enjoy learning the differences in how we describe when different animals are active..including humans.

Nocturnal: Animals that are primarily active and hunt for food during the night include bats, most owls, , possums, foxes, and raccoons. Also some insects and reptiles are nocturnal. These animals senses are adapted for low light conditions with good hearing, smell & night vision.

Diurnal: Animals that are primarily active during the daylight hours. That’s right, human beings are diurnal. Other examples of diurnal animals are cows & sheep, dogs, elephants, hawks, turtles & butterflies. It doesn’t mean they CAN’T be active at night under some circumstances, but they are primarily asleep during the night hours and awake during the daylight hours. These animals posses good daytime vision.

Crepuscular: Animals that are primarily active during the twilight hours of dawn and dusk are known as “Crepuscular”…the beautiful word that led me down this rabbit hole. Speaking of which, rabbits are crepuscular, along with deer, bears, and bobcats. This schedule allows them to avoid predators that mainly hunt in the day or night. It’s also cooler during these times but still enough light to see. Interestingly, house cats are considered crepuscular.

Cathemeral: Animals that are active for short, irregular periods through both the day and night. Examples of cathemeral animals are lions, coyotes, lemurs, and otters. This characteristic allows these animals to be alert and in food mode when the perfect circumstances arise; food availability, lack of predators, etc. There are the fewest animals in this category which is why you may have never heard the word. I hadn’t.

Today Peter will share how he regenerates soil at his home in Pine Cove. As we know, decomposed granite is the most common “soil” in idyllwild. Learn how Peter has turned his granitic soil into a rich organic medium for plants to thrive. You must RSVP in advance for this class to get Peter’s address in Pine Cove.

Please RSVP for this class. The donation for this class is $10 and can be paid at the garden on the day of the class. Rain/snow cancels the class.

Newly formed Therapy group had massive damage to their property in the flash floods last week. They are appealing for both financial assistance and community participation to help repair and clean up their property so they can get back to helping those in our community. Can you help?

Just days away from celebrating the one year anniversary of opening our therapeutic healing space, A Human Sanctuary, a flash flood tore down our mountain community carrying with it debris and destruction. Only two weeks prior, we completed the fencing and walkways to make way for workshops and children’s nature connection programs. The waters swept away in less than an hour what had taken us a year of love, stewardship, and hard work to build and bring to life. This event has displaced the healing services of multiple therapists who provide care to clients local to Idyllwild and the surrounding areas. We are devastated and heartbroken to see this magical place we poured ourselves into leveled so completely. In Ally’s sweet little four year old words, “It’s bad, it’s real bad”.

We are asking for anyone who is able to donate financial support to help us repair the fencing (a wiser version making room for Mother Nature) but are also looking for folks to offer their time, energy, or equipment to help us move the debris out of the yard and creek bed. We will be doing a work party on Sunday Sept. 28th between 9am and 5pm. Bring rakes and shovels if you have them! If you own heavier equipment, such as a small excavator or backhoe, and can donate some time or offer a discounted rate, please contact Sascha or myself directly.
