The Science Behind Fall Colors

As we approach the time of year when everyone starts searching for the brilliant colors of autumn, it’s a perfect opportunity to explore how nature produces these breathtaking hues.
The Hidden Colors of Leaves
Most of the vibrant colors we see in fall have been present in the leaves all year long. However, they are hidden beneath the dominant green shade created by chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is a green pigment found in all green plants. Its primary role is to absorb light and provide the energy needed for photosynthesis, the process that allows plants to make food from sunlight.
Why Leaves Are Green in Spring and Summer
During the spring and summer, days are longer and there is more sunlight. This abundance of sunlight prompts trees and plants to produce large amounts of chlorophyll. As a result, the green color of chlorophyll dominates the appearance of the leaves, masking the other colors.
The Arrival of Fall Colors
When the days begin to shorten and temperatures drop in the fall, trees produce less chlorophyll. As chlorophyll production slows and eventually stops, the green pigment fades away. This process reveals the leaves’ natural colors, which had been hidden throughout the warmer months. Ultimately, when there is no more chlorophyll, the leaves die and fall from the trees.
Nature’s Grand Finale
This seasonal transformation offers us a spectacular view of the trees’ “true colors.” It’s as if the trees wear green costumes for half the year, and in autumn, they briefly reveal their real appearance. After the leaves fall, the trees stand bare through the winter, and the cycle of photosynthesis begins anew in the spring. Nature’s process is truly amazing, offering us this colorful display each year.
Happy Fall, everyone!

The Idyllwild Garden Club began offering this once-a-year event on a Saturday for all of those members and residents that can’t make a normally scheduled Wednesday meeting. Our event, Discover Mountain Gardening, is on October 18th from 9:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. at the Idyllwild Nature Center meeting room, located at 25225 Highway 243, Idyllwild. This event and parking are free to everyone who wishes to come.
We have three wonderful speakers/topics that you’re sure to enjoy. At 9:30 a.m., native expert Bruce Watts will give a presentation on native plants and pollinators. At 10:30 a.m., indoor plant expert Julie Roy will talk about house plants, and will give tips on how to transplant them. And at 11:30 a.m., Stephen Sutton and Bob Greenamyer will give a talk on Birds, Bats and Bees, discussing the benefits of these critters and how to attract them. Following this presentation, there will be a workshop where you can build a bat box or bird house to take home (there will be a small fee for supplies).
Fall is the time to plant bulbs and native plants, as well as feeding your lilac plants. At this meeting we will have our annual bulb sale, with five unique and special daffodil bulbs available for purchase. We will also have lilac food available for purchase, as well as plants, both indoor and outdoor. Don’t forget about our gardening books and our club t-shirts! Membership information is readily available, and refreshments will be served.
