Back to some of the original topics…
Granary Tree:
One of my first postings in Good Morning Idyllwild back in May of 2023 was about these amazing “Granary Trees”. I find them fascinating. All members of an Acorn Woodpecker group spend large amounts of time storing acorns in these carefully chosen trees. Usually a group of about a dozen acorn woodpeckers will claim a tree as “their own tree” and work throughout the summer and fall to stock it full of acorns. They actually peck out individual holes in which to place the acorns to dry and be available to that family over the winter. A single “Granary Tree” can have up to 50,000 holes in it. They are fascinating to see.
I know of a couple of these trees in Idyllwild, mainly out near the Hub (Mountain Bike parking area at the end of Idyllwild Arts road) or there’s a big one right next to Idyllwild Realty across the driveway from the Ice Cream store. There’s also a big one in the Historical Museum Garden near the picnic tables. I’m sure there are many others around town that you can find if you look closely.
Here is an amazing video if you are interested about Acorn Woodpeckers and their “Granary Trees”.
