New Years Around the World…

Did you ever wonder how people in other parts of the world celebrate the New Year? Here are some of the more interesting traditions around the world.

In Scotland, Christmas was banned for 400 years so the partying moved to the last day of the year which the Scots refer to as Hogmanay (pronounced Hog-ma-nay). Did you know the song Auld Lang Syne comes from Scotland?

In the Philippines, wearing round shapes is good luck so many people wear polka dots. They also eat round fruits such as grapes, oranges, & watermelons for good luck.

In Brazil, people wear white and jump into the ocean in their white clothes at midnight.

In Mexico, they like to stroll around the block or sometimes just around the house with an empty suitcase which is to signify a year filled with travel and new experiences.

In Greece, pomegranates play an important role and houses will hang pomegranates, a sign of prosperity and fertility in their houses, then smash them against a door at midnight. The juicer the pomegranate, the better the year ahead.

In Cuba, people gather all the bad energy and evil spirits in a bucket of dirty water and throw it out the front door or out a window at midnight signifying a clean start to the new year.

In Russia, they observe the last 12 seconds of the old year in silence and remember the year’s most important events and make wishes for the new year.

In Ireland, besides starting the year with a freshly cleaned house, they also set an empty place at the dinner table for any loved ones lost during the year.

In Italy and Spain, it’s considered good luck to wear red underwear, so everyone has red underwear to wear on this day.

In Japan they visit a temple on New Years day and exchange their old lucky charms for new ones for the upcoming year.

I was asked this week about a memorial in front of Idyllwild School to a man named Dr. Marion Null. Below his name, the inscription says “Like a tree rooted on earth and reaching to heaven, he saved and extended all of life.”

After doing some research, I found that the Garden Club of Idyllwild erected this monument in 1968 to Dr. Null, the year before he died at age 98. He moved here with his wife in 1941 after a career as a missionary doctor in Asia. His wife died in 1947 and Dr. Null together with Ernie Maxwell started a local chapter of the Izaac Walton League (named after a famous sportsman’s & conservationist). Dr. Null was obsessed with planting Sequoia Trees, even though they were not native to our mountain. He planted the two that still stand in IDY Park; he planted many in front of the school that did not survive, and he was instrumental in getting the forest service to plant Sequoia Trees in various places here in the San Jacintos. There is a big grove of them near Black Mountain still today. In total, he was responsible for planting 12,000 Sequoia Trees. He was also an avid volunteer in the community and taught first aid classes, and served as President of the Chamber of Commerce for many years. The Garden Club erected this monument before his death to commemorate his contribution to the community for 28 years. Below is a photo of the sequoias he planted in front of the Idyllwild School. They are no longer there.

Where can I get a quick snack?

Full Wolf Moon

Moonrise: 4:05 pm

This full moon was named the Wolf Moon by Native American tribes for the wolves that would howl during
winter nights. Long thought to be howling from hunger, current knowledge reflects that wolves howl for a
variety of reasons, including to communicate with their pack and to protect their territory.
As this full moon rises into the night sky, it offers an opportunity to go into a place of deep self-reflection.
The spiritual meaning of the Wolf Moon is a reminder that there is an unseen connection to your own “pack”
that is worth recognizing and honoring.

Ever wonder where your mountain water comes from? Join us for a fascinating library presentation that pulls back the curtain on Idyllwild’s water system!
We’re covering it all:

Source: Learn about our reliance on groundwater wells and the role of Foster Lake and Strawberry Creek in our supply.

Quality: Find out how the water is treated, including pH adjustment and disinfection, to keep it safe and clean.

Quantity: What are our storage capacities? We’ll share the numbers on the 18 million gallons of raw water storage in Foster Lake and total system capacity.

🌲 Sustainability: Understanding the unique challenges of supplying water in a semi-arid mountain environment.

This is essential info for every Idyllwild resident!
