Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day honors the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., whose leadership and moral courage helped transform the United States during the Civil Rights Movement. Through nonviolent protest, powerful oratory, and an unwavering belief in justice, King challenged the nation to confront segregation, racism, and inequality embedded in its laws and institutions. The day serves as a reminder that many of the rights enjoyed today—such as greater access to voting, education, and public accommodations—were achieved through sacrifice, persistence, and a commitment to peaceful change. Remembering King is not only about honoring history, but also about recognizing the responsibility each generation has to protect and expand those hard-won freedoms.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day became a U.S. federal holiday after years of advocacy following the 1968 assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.. Supporters argued that King’s leadership in the Civil Rights Movement and his commitment to nonviolent change deserved national recognition. Opposition initially focused on cost and controversy, delaying passage for more than a decade. In 1983, Congress approved the legislation, and President Ronald Reagan signed it into law on November 2. The holiday was first observed in January 1986, honoring King’s legacy and the ongoing pursuit of equality.
