Snow in Idyllwild

Some people are wondering whether we’re even going to get snow this year in Idyllwild. Don’t worry—there has never been a year without snow. The lowest recorded snowfall was during the winter of 1983–1984, when just 4.8 inches fell. On the opposite extreme, the winter of 1948–1949 brought a remarkable 108 inches—about nine feet of snow.
Idyllwild sits right on the edge of the snow line, at roughly 5,200–5,300 feet in elevation. Because of this, just a couple of degrees can make the difference between rain and snow. That’s also one of the main reasons we don’t have major winter sports like skiing or snowboarding here: snowfall simply isn’t consistent enough. During an El Niña year, which tends to be warmer and drier—like this one—we usually see less snow. By comparison, Big Bear sits about 1,300–1,400 feet higher than Idyllwild and therefore receives significantly more snowfall.
Over time, the average snowfall in Idyllwild is about three feet per year. Some winters bring much more; for example, during the 2022–2023 season, we received around six feet of snow. The timing of snowfall also varies widely. Snow has fallen as early as late October and as late as early May, though December through February are typically the snowiest months.
So don’t fret—it will snow eventually. We just won’t know how much until the season wraps up around April.
The attached photo shows the koi pond at Silver Pines Lodge during an especially heavy snowfall in 2006.
