Idyllwild Sun/Moon (Rise/Set) Calendar

Next Full Moon: Thursday April 2nd

Humber Park & Rollin Humber
Everyone in Idyllwild is familiar with Humber Park, but did you know the story behind it? Rollin R. Humber was born in Montana in 1886. He made his way to Los Angeles in the 1920’s and became a real estate broker. He worked for 2 men named Strong & Dickinson (Sound familiar?) They sent him to Idyllwild in 1939 to manage their “Idyllwild Mountain Park Company” which had purchased 2,600 acres in Fern Valley to sell as homes and vacation cabins. He had lost his wife while living in L.A. and met and married again in Idyllwild, the secretary of the Fern Valley Water District. Rollin Humber moved to Idyllwild and became very involved in the community.
He was the president of Fern Valley Water for many years, active with the Chamber of Commerce, and the Isaac Walton League along with Ernie Maxwell. He was one of the founding members of the Community Church and spent the remainder of his life in Idyllwild. He is known as the “Father of Fern Valley”. Upon his death in 1955, his company, the Idyllwild Mountain Park Company, donated land to the County of Riverside at the top of Fern Valley where the trailhead for Devil’s Slide trail begins, in honor of Rollin Humber specifically for a parking area. In 1990, the County traded the land to the U.S. Forest Service in exchange for Hurkey Creek Park, and the Forest Service has owned and managed Humber Park ever since.
