Summer Solstice

Because of the tilt of the earth as it circles the sun (which takes 1 year where we live in the Northern Hemisphere), the earth is exposed to the sun for shorter and longer times during the year. Solstice comes from combining the Latin words sol for “Sun” and sistere for “To Stand Still”. Ever since December 21st, our days have been getting longer and our nights have been getting shorter, heading toward the “summer solstice” which is where the earth stops and starts heading toward shorter days again. The Summer Solstice (this Sunday) is the day the lengthening stops and the shortening begins. You’ would think that the earliest sunrise and the latest sunset would be ON the Summer Solstice. Not true. Because of the earth’s orbit and the tilt of the earth, the earliest sunrises happen a few days before the solstice, and the latest sunsets happen a few days after the Solstice. Seems strange that our days will start to get shorter immediately following the Summer solstice when summer is just beginning. But the earth takes a long time to tilt back the other way. So make plans this Sunday to enjoy the longest day of the year! Oh…and in Australia, it is the Winter Solstice and Winter is just beginning. They are experiencing the shortest day of the year at the very same time. Isn’t our earth amazing!

Garden Club’s
June – Garden of the Month

“Strawberry Creekside Stroll”

While water is still flowing, you won’t want to miss this shady stroll along Strawberry Creek to discover June’s Idyllwild Garden of the Month.  Marilyn Kemp’s creekside garden is an experience you won’t want to miss.  Park near the Amphitheatre / Brewpub and find the path along Strawberry Creek and saunter downstream. When you reach the two wooden chairs (and our Garden of the Month sign), you’ve reached the destination. Rest on the chairs or stroll past our Garden Club sign and into Marilyn’s Garden side garden. Her lovely garden includes Junipers, Privets, Cherry Laurel, Pyracantha, English Ivy, Artemisia (Great Basin Sagebrush), Smoke Tree, Snapdragon, Euonymus, Lilacs, Grevillea and Rock Roses (beautiful blooms).

This hidden stream-side trail is shaded with mature Alder, Willow, Pine, Cedar, Canyon and Live Oak trees. You’ll also find a cornucopia of native plants, including California Rose, Thimbleberry, Meadow Rue, Snowberry, Gooseberry, Columbine, Bracken Fern, Checker Mallow, Hedge Nettle, California Fuchsia, Mugwort, Sedge and Juncus (Rush), Mahonia (Oregon Grape), California Everlasting, and, of course, strawberries. You will also encounter several non-native invasives includes Armenian Blackberry, Ivy, Vinca and Mustard. Special THANKS to Michael Duval for his great expertise in confirming identification of the plants.

If you know an impressive Idyllwild garden you’d like to have featured, please contact Stephen Sutton at (562) 254-6721 or stepheninidy@gmail.com

James Reserve Field Trip
10 am – 12:30 pm
FREE
Everyone Welcome

Join us on June 25th at 10:00 a.m. for a field trip to the James Reserve! The reserve is a beautiful, natural area close to Idyllwild where scientists can observe the workings of nature.

The entryway is located to the left of Lake Fulmor, and Casey Woodall, Reserve Director, says that they can handle up to 15 cars. We encourage carpooling to this event. After the tour of the reserve, we can enjoy a picnic lunch, so bring your lunch and water that day. Please let us know if you will be going on this field trip by replying to this email.

People can park in the parking lot for Lake Fulmor, unless they want to drive into the James Reserve. If they are driving into that area, I recall that there is parking at the reserve. If they’re leaving their cars at Lake Fulmor, they do need a wilderness pass permit, I believe, but not at the reserve.
