Logging in Idyllwild

One of the first industries in Idyllwild was logging. There have been 18 identified sawmills around Idyllwild, as far down as the edge of Garner Valley to Fuller Mill Creek towards Banning. They span in time from 1875 – 1928. With the onslaught of pioneers moving west, the discovery of gold, and the building of the railroads across the United States, timber was in big demand.
In 1871, the government gave the Southern Pacific Railroad almost half of the property that made up the San Jacinto mountains, but gave it to them in every-other-square-mile sections. The railroad sold the logging rights, leased land for grazing, sold to settlers, or held onto it for appreciation. Of course the railroad was the first customer for all that lumber but once the railroad was finished in this area and moved east, lumber was needed to build cities, towns, and boxes for the budding citrus industry of California.

In 1897, president Grover Cleveland designated the San Jacinto Forest Preserve protecting the forest from further logging on government owned land. But logging continued on private land until 1928 when the last sawmill closed down. Because the sawmills moved often, and due to the steepness of the terrain, not all the old growth was cut down. There are still trees that are 300 – 600 years old, although many of the trees close into town are only 100 – 125 years old. In early 1900’s, using logging roads, tourists started coming up the mountain to enjoy the cool mountain air. In time, logging disappeared completely and was replaced by the main industry we have today…tourism!

Weather: Highs of 81 – 88 – Lows of 57 – 67

Garden of the Month
Month of July – Open to the public.

Pine Cove
Home of Vicky & Steve
Garden open sun-up to sun-down.
Don’t miss the stroll around the retaining wall to the back of the house where a lovely custom-designed she shed and greenhouse are tucked away among lovely decks, seating areas and water
features. What’s most remarkable is their use of a fallen,
hallow oak tree in the form of a “stump garden.” Plants
are thriving in these carbon-based “pots” and the native
wildlife has found an organic paradise. What an
innovative, natural way to landscape a hillside to
minimize erosion, retain moisture while ensuring years-
long compost and nutrients for the soil.
If you know or have an Idyllwild garden that you’d like to be featured, please contact Stephen Sutton at stepheninidy@gmail.com or (562) 254-6721
