Hollywood in Idyllwild

Logging in our area was just starting to trail off when Hollywood discovered Idyllwild. Having the proximity to Hollywood, and the look of the wild west, The budding filmmaker Cecil B. DeMille in his directorial debut filmed parts of the very first feature length silent film “Squaw Man” (1913) in Idyllwild. More than 100 films followed and Idyllwild became a popular location for movie makers to depict mountain locals such as Canada, the Italian dolomites, up-state New York, and anywhere that pine trees were necessary.
Other famous movies and stars spent time filming in Idyllwild such as Kathryn Hepburn in “Spitfire”(1934), Peter Fonda & Nancy Sinatra in “The Wild Angels” (1966) and of course Elvis Presley in “Kid Galahad“(1961). More recently, Idyllwild has been used as a backdrop for independent filmmakers, Hallmark style holiday films, and Streaming series such as “The Old Man” with Jeff Bridges in 2019.
If you missed the presentation about “Hollywood in Idyllwild” done by Historical Society archivist Bob Greenamyer, you have an opportunity to catch it in an encore performance this coming Saturday July 18th at the Idyllwild Nature Center at 11:00 am. Bob presents extensive research into this amazing era in our humble little town. You won’t want to miss it.

Garden open sun-up to sun-down.
Don’t miss the stroll around the retaining wall to the back of the house where a lovely custom-designed she shed and greenhouse are tucked away among lovely decks, seating areas and water
features. What’s most remarkable is their use of a fallen,
hallow oak tree in the form of a “stump garden.” Plants
are thriving in these carbon-based “pots” and the native
wildlife has found an organic paradise. What an
innovative, natural way to landscape a hillside to
minimize erosion, retain moisture while ensuring years-
long compost and nutrients for the soil.
If you know or have an Idyllwild garden that you’d like to be featured, please contact Stephen Sutton at stepheninidy@gmail.com or (562) 254-6721
