Tree full of Turkey Vultures in Idyllwild – Photo by Stan Peckler

line

Turkey Vulture

With Halloween just around the corner, I saved this amazing bird for just this season. The Turkey Vulture. This photo was taken here in Idyllwild by Frazier Drake.

Turkey Vultures are so named because their heads look like wild turkeys. They don’t have feathers on their heads so they don’t get bits of decaying flesh stuck to their feathers. They ONLY eat dead animals and have an amazing sense of smell which allows them to smell the gasses of decaying animals from as far away as a mile. They are the largest of the vultures but are not dangerous to pets or humans. They are actually extremely important to the ecosystem because they clean up the dead carcasses left behind. They roost in trees at night with other birds (see photo above), but hunt for dead animals alone during the day. They are migratory and are primarily in our area during the summertime. Did you know that a group of turkey vultures is called a “kettle of vultures”? Happy halloween everyone!

Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos), celebrated November 1 and 2, is a vibrant holiday rooted in Indigenous Latin American and Catholic traditions that honors departed loved ones through joyful family reunions, colorful altars (ofrendas), and symbolic monarch butterflies. To mark the occasion, Casa Querida in Forest Haven is hosting two special community events in Idyllwild: a screening of the movie Coco at The Rustic Theater on Friday, October 30 ($10 at the door), and a gathering on Sunday, November 1 featuring crafts, pan de muerto, and a noon aerial show.
