Tax Day:

As Benjamin Franklin once said…”In this world, nothing is certain except death & taxes”. While death is certain for all of us, not all of us actually pay taxes. About 60% of all households in the U.S. pay income tax. All countries in the world have some type of income tax, and ours started in 1861 to help pay for the Civil War, but was repealed the following year. It wasn’t until 1913 when an amendment to the constitution was passed that allowed the government to legally tax their citizens on their income. Before that, most taxes were raised by taxing products that people purchased. At first, the rates were between 1% & 7% depending on your income level. The highest rates were during WWII where individuals could pay up to 94% on a portion of their income. Today rates range from 0% – 37%.

The IRS is expecting about 168 million tax returns to be filed this year and they expect to collect about 2.33 TRILLION dollars in income tax. That tax will go to pay primarily for Social Security, Healthcare, National Defense, and a huge amount will go toward the interest the government owes on our national debt. So every time the government prints money or borrows money, a greater amount of our taxes goes to paying the interest on that debt.

In the U.S. there are only 9 states that have no state income tax. No, California is definitely not one of them. Depending on your income level, you can expect to pay not only the top rate of 37% to the federal government, but an additional 13.3% to the State of California. California has the highest Income Tax rate of any state in the U.S.

If you think you don’t make enough money to merit filing an income tax return, you could actually receive money from the government, depending on certain tax credits, so it may be worth your while to file. You can actually find many places to file online for free by searching for “File my taxes for Free online”.

If you’ve ever wondered who pays the most taxes in the U.S., it’s Elon Musk. He paid more than 11 Billion in taxes this year. Happy Tax day everyone! It’s Monday April 15th.
