Inauguration Day – January 20th

The very first inauguration of our first president, George Washington, was held on April 30th, 1789 in New York which was serving as the center of our government after the Revolutionary War. It was written in the Articles of Confederation that the president would be inaugurated every 4 years on the first Wednesday of March, which in that year just happened to be March 4th, so that became inauguration day. The problem was, they couldn’t wrangle together enough members of congress for a quorum to certify the election and by the time they did, it took George Washington another week to get to New York on horseback from Virginia to be inaugurated, so that’s why the first one was April 30th. But after that, it was always March 4th.

In 1933, due to the lame duck term being almost 4 months long and the outgoing president not being responsible to the voters, they changed inauguration day to January 20th. If January 20th falls on a Sunday, the incoming president takes the oath in private so there IS a president, then does a public ceremony the following Monday. Three presidents have been sworn in prior to their actual public inauguration ceremony: Eisenhower, Regan, & Obama.

In 1849, Zachary Taylor refused to be sworn in on March 4th, a Sunday, to observe the sabbath, and the previous president’s term was up on noon of that Sunday, so the president of the senate, David Rice Atchison unofficially became president for 1 day. You can read about the controversy here.

The 2nd president, John Adams, after losing reelection to Thomas Jefferson, became the first president to skip the inauguration of his successor. 28 years later, his son, John Quincy Adams also lost reelection to Andrew Jackson and also skipped the tradition of attending his successor’s inauguration.

Inauguration day has come with many tales of cold weather. In 1841. William Henry Harrison rode his horse to his inauguration, then proceeded to be sworn in and deliver a record setting 2+ hour inauguration address without a coat on to show how tough he was. He then rode in a parade and attended 3 balls. He came down with a cold the next day that turned to pneumonia and ended up dying 31 days after he was sworn in making his presidency the shortest in history.

President Ronald Reagan holds the record for the warmest and the coldest inauguration days. The temperature during his first inaguration in 1981 was 55 degrees, and his second in 1985 was 7 degrees. Another fun fact about Reagan is, because he loved jelly beans so much (which he developed while quitting smoking) they ordered 3 1/2 tons of red, white & blue jelly beans for his inauguration. In fact, Jelly Belly invented the blueberry jelly bean just for his inauguration so they would have a dark blue jelly bean.

There are many traditions that have carried over through the years. For instance, the outgoing president always rides to the ceremony from the White House with the incoming president and their wives. They always take their oath on a Bible (usually one that is special to them) and the inauguration is always followed with a parade and several balls. In 1873, 100 canaries had been brought in to an outside tent for Ulysses S. Grants’ Inauguration, but it was so cold, the champagne froze and all the canaries died. In 1829, Andrew Jackson invited everyone back to the White House for a party following his inauguration, and the party got so rowdy, he had to be rescued from the mob and significant damage was done to the White House.

I can’t wait to see what crazy things happen on Monday January 20th when President Trump is inaugurated. It’s been a crazy year. Happy Inauguration Day everyone!

Thursday January 16th
See Mars at it’s Brightest

Mars will reach opposition with the Sun on January 16, 2025. The planet will appear larger and brighter than usual. While the Red Planet will be easy to see with the naked eye, a pair of binoculars will intensify the red-orange color of Mars.

Humanity is considering colonizing Mars. Elon Musk, the founder of SpaceX, has long stated his vision of building a self-sustaining city on Mars. NASA is also working on a mission to send people to Mars: the agency plans to first establish human presence on the Moon by the early 2030s and then land astronauts on Mars in the 2040s.
