Idyllwild Sanatorium

Before Antibiotics were discovered, Tuberculosis, or as it was known then as “Consumption”, was very prevalent, especially in Europe where in the late 1800’s, 25% of the population died each year from it. The creation of “Sanatoriums” were on the rise everywhere, including the U.S. A public health doctor named Walter Lindley from Los Angles, decided to build a sanatorium which is a specialized health facility, primarily for tuberculosis, in the mountains where he thought people would come for fresh air and rest to cure their disease. So in 1901, together with a group of doctors from Los Angeles, they built the Idyllwild Sanatorium. It could house 40 patients at one time, and was erected right in the center of town where Idy Park is today.
It only lasted 2 years as a Sanatorium, as patients discovered that the altitude in Idyllwild, along with the cold nights, was not conducive to healing. After trying to rent half the building to patients and half to tourists, the Sanatorium was converted to a full time Inn with no patients allowed in 1903. Sadly in 1904, a fire burned the giant 2 story building to the ground. It was rebuilt as a 1-story inn and ready for guests by 1905.

The second building was still in the same center of town location and was called “The Bungalow”. It went back and forth with various owners and managers and was eventually renamed “Idyllwild Inn” . It was sold again in 1917 to Claudius Emerson who built a cement swimming pool across the street from the inn where the current “FORT” is located. Emerson and his family ran the inn for 21 years with all his kids working at it. In 1936 Emerson lost the inn in bankruptcy, and in 1945, the building again burned to the ground, not to be rebuilt on the same location again. The property had changed hands again, and in 1949, the new owners, Jerry & Eleanor Johnson started making the plot of land where both buildings had previously stood, into a park, eventually named Eleanor Park. But the first major building erected in Idyllwild was dedicated to the healing properties of fresh air, rest & relaxation in what we all know now as Idy Park.

Full Pink Moon
April’s full moon is widely known as the Full Pink Moon, even though it doesn’t actually turn pastel pink as the name suggests. The Full Pink Moon’s name comes from the abundance of moss phlox, a common little pink flower that typically begins to spread across the ground in early spring. With that said, this creeping phlox is not the only thing that begins blooming during the Full Pink Moon.
In many Native American tribes, April’s full moon is associated with the bustling life and vibrant growth of spring.
