Photo by Bruce Watts – Pale Swallowtail on California Thistle

We lost Bruce on March 14th. We will be having a memorial where friends and anyone who knew Bruce can come and tell stories of his heart for this mountain. The memorial will be at the Nature Center in the outdoor amphitheater by the giant oak at 10 am on Saturday April 18th. Check out all his wonderful photos on his FB Page Bruce Edward Watts.

Quail

We have 3 species of quail in California: Mountain Quail, Gambel Quail & California Quail. California quail are the most prevalent in Idyllwild and they happen to be the state birds. They have the pronounced top-notch on their heads that droop forward. Both male and female have them but the top notch is more pronounced in the male. The Gambel Quail are found further down in the desert. The Mountain Quail are here in Idyllwild, but they are pretty rare and very elusive so you probably won’t see many of them. You are mostly going to see the California Quail.
It’s egg laying time right now so you will most likely not see big groups of quail while they are choosing their mates and laying their eggs. But I’ve seen an abundance of them lately, most likely due to the early warmer weather. During April & May a female may lay up to 28 eggs; 3 – 4 at a time over the egg laying period. Once the chicks hatch, families come together for protection and you will see several males, females and many babies out running around together.
If you want to see a close up view, the Nature Center on Hwy 243 has 3-4 adult California Quail in an enclosure outside the Museum that you can see.
The main differences between the 3 types of quail are:
- The California are bigger and chunkier and are primarily the ones we see in Idyllwild
- The Gambel look similar but are primarily in the desert, skinnier, and have a black belly marking
- The Mountain quail have straight head feathers and are very elusive. We have them in Idyllwild but sightings are rare.

Although the PCT Association recommends hikers attempting to hike the entire PCT Trail northbound (2,650 miles from Mexican border to Canadian border) NOT start until mid-late April, inevitably, we will start to see PCT hikers coming through Idyllwild. About 50 hikers a day usually start the trail at the border heading north.

Public Welcome
In our 80th year at Idyllwild Arts, we are honored to facilitate a discussion about one of the most impactful founders in the early days of Idyllwild Arts and the Native American Arts Program. Ataloa, born Mary Stone McLendon, was a Chickasaw woman who recognized the central role the arts could play in helping Native people express themselves in changing times. She founded the first Native American art museum and the Indian art program at Bacone College. She taught at the then Idyllwild School of Music and Arts from 1950 to 1963, encouraging a generation of young artists to this day.
Leading this conversation is America Meredith (Cherokee Nation), who is the publishing editor of First American Art Magazine and an art writer, critic, visual artist, and independent curator whose community-based curatorial practice spans more than three decades.

Garden Club Pot-Luck Meeting & Speaker
Idyllwild Nature Center
Pot-Luck 12:30
Meeting 1:00
Speaker 1:30
The Idyllwild Garden Club will hold its first general meeting of the season on Wednesday, April 1st at the Idyllwild Nature Center, 25225 Highway 243, Idyllwild. It’s a potluck, and the garden club board will supply a main dish of chili and soups. If you’re a member, you’re encouraged to bring a side dish or appetizer of your choosing. You don’t have to bring a dish if you’re a guest, and the first meeting is free! We will begin dining at 12:30 p.m., and a brief meeting will follow at 1:00 p.m.
Stephen Sutton will be our speaker that afternoon, and he’ll do a presentation on the history of the Idyllwild Garden Club at 1:30 p.m. Stephen is a most engaging speaker and an avid historian of Idyllwild, so this promises to be a great kick-off to our meetings for the upcoming year.

Wednesday April 1st
Full Pink Moon
Rising at 7:06 pm
The Old Farmer’s Almanac draws its Full Moon names from various sources, including Native American, Colonial American, and European traditions. Traditionally, these names refer not just to the Full Moon but to the entire lunar month in which it occurs. While the name “Pink Moon” might suggest a rosy-colored Moon, the reality is a bit less magical. The name comes from the early spring bloom of a wildflower native to eastern North America: Phlox subulata, commonly known as creeping phlox or moss phlox. This flower, often called “moss pink,” was in full bloom around April’s Full Moon.
Thanks to this seasonal connection, the April Full Moon became known as the Pink Moon!
