Snow Plant – Photo by Mimi Jacaruso

line

Snow Plant

The Snow Flower is one of the coolest flowers you’ll ever happen across and it will probably be a surprise. They pop up in the early spring, sometimes right through a patch of snow. They lack chlorophyll which is why they’re red. They are a parasitic plant and derive their nutrients from the fungi down in the earth. They are in the same family as the manzanita plant. Look at the shape of the flowers in the close up photo. They are the same little bell shape as the manzanita flowers. Keep your eyes out and see if you can find one this spring.

The Flowers are blossoming everywhere!

PCT Hikers Page

Although the PCT Association recommends hikers attempting to hike the entire PCT Trail northbound (2,650 miles from Mexican border to Canadian border) NOT start until mid-late April, inevitably, we will start to see PCT hikers coming through Idyllwild. About 50 hikers a day usually start the trail at the border heading north.

To culminate our spring Michael Kabotie Lecture Series, we will welcome tribal members and leadership from the Cahuilla Band of Indians and Santa Rosa Cahuilla Band of Indians, as well as others from the community, to share about the importance of cultural and land stewardship in these ever-evolving times. Even in what is a very tumultuous time, there remains an enduring and strong connection between people and land that supports cultural healing and growth.

Join Leah Scott (Dramatic Arts ’27) for a performance of her original play, “Comorbidity,” which tells the story of a teenage girl named Edith with obsessive-compulsive disorder. Her OCD is personified onstage as an intrusive presence that constantly interferes with her thoughts and actions. The play takes place over a single day, showing the ups and downs of daily life. It is a story of acceptance, but not submission, and of learning that her OCD does not have to define her identity or control her future. “Comorbidity” is about the ongoing effort it takes to live with mental illness, and the importance of hope, understanding, and human connection.
