Tahquitz Rock

Tahquitz Rock is a monolith. A  monolith is a geological feature consisting of a single massive stone or rock.

Tahquitz or Lily Rock is the largest monolith south of Yosemite. El Capitan is the largest in the United States and one of the 10 largest in the world. El Capitan stands 3600 feet above the valley floor. Tahquitz has a 1000 foot face.

In the 1930s, the Rock Climbing Section (RCS) of the Sierra Club in California started a campaign to identify potential rock climbing locations in southern California. RCS member Jim Smith “discovered” Tahquitz in June 1935.

The Yosemite Decimal System (YDS) of classifying routes was developed at Tahquitz by members of the RCS of the Angeles Chapter of the Sierra Club in the 1950s. It was easier to drive to Idyllwild from Los Angeles than it was to drive to Yosemite.

Today, Idyllwild is famous for its rock climbing. There is a local organization called Idyllwild Climbing Alliance that strives to give back to the climbing areas through service projects involving trail maintenance, trash and graffiti removal, and facilitating management of climbing anchors.
They support the climbing community with resources related to camping, lodging, food, and gear needed for a great climbing experience, and the ongoing operations of the ICA.

PCT Hikers Page

Although the PCT Association recommends hikers attempting to hike the entire PCT Trail northbound (2,650 miles from Mexican border to Canadian border) NOT start until mid-late April, inevitably, we will start to see PCT hikers coming through Idyllwild. About 50 hikers a day usually start the trail at the border heading north.

For decades, Idyllwild School has carried on a magical tradition: sending our students into the great outdoors to learn, grow, and make memories that last a lifetime. From the starry skies of AstroCamp to the coastal wonders of Catalina, these trips have shaped the lives of thousands of local kids—and we want the 2026-2027 school year to be the best one yet!

Making the Impossible, Possible

Every student deserves the chance to experience the wonder of AstroCamp or the thrill of an island expedition. However, we know that for many families—especially those with multiple explorers at home—the cost of camp can be a steep mountain to climb.

This is where you come in! Your generosity ensures that no student is left behind. Whether it’s a small gift or a full sponsorship, your contribution makes these life-changing adventures accessible to every child in our community.

The Idyllwild Middle School Booster Club is a dedicated nonprofit working hard to lower costs for everyone. We fund the buses and bridge the gaps, but your tax-deductible sponsorship goes directly to the families who need it most.

  • Average cost per student: $400
  • 6th Grade: Adventure TBD (Stay tuned!)
  • 7th Grade: Journeying to AstroCamp
  • 8th Grade: Setting sail for Catalina
