California Mountain King Snake

I was beyond thrilled to spot this California King Snake right in my own backyard! While they might look intimidating, these beauties are incredibly beneficial and completely harmless to humans and pets. They are the “neighborhood watch” of the reptile world because they actually eat rattlesnakes (they’re immune to the venom!). Since they lack fangs and venom themselves, they use constriction to hunt.

They can live up to 15 years, and although they look a bit like Coral Snakes, their pattern gives them away. Just remember the rhyme: “Red to black, venom lack; red to yellow, kill a fellow.” As you can see in my photo, the red touches black—so he’s a friendly neighbor! If you see one, please don’t hurt it; just let it do its job.

Take a look at the Coral Snake, a famous resident of the South and Southeast! You can spot them by their unique pattern where red is banded by yellow—just remember the life-saving rhyme: “Red to yellow, kill a fellow.”

Did you know that any snake with “King” in its name, like the King Snake or King Cobra, earned that title because it eats other snakes?. This behavior is called ophiophagy (pronounced Off-Fi-O-Fa-Gee). It’s not just snakes, though; nature has several specialized snake hunters like hawks, eagles, mongooses, skunks, and even some lizards. The best part? These amazing animals have evolved a natural immunity to the venom of their prey, making them true masters of the hunt
