Western Fence Lizard
I know we’ve all spotted our fair share of lizards around Idyllwild—and often inside our houses! If you find one indoors, don’t panic: they mainly eat insects like spiders, beetles, flies, and ants, making them great little roommates. However, they do need water, so it’s best to gently relocate them outside. They’re quite docile and easy to catch.
While officially called the Western Fence Lizard, they are fondly known as “Blue-Bellies” (though only the males sport that bright blue color to attract females!).
A few fun facts about our scaly neighbors:
The Ultimate Superpower: They carry a special protein in their blood that actually kills the Lyme disease bacteria inside ticks! When a tick feeds on a Blue-Belly, the tick is cured of Lyme disease. Lucky us!
Tail Trick: If they get scared, they can “drop” their tails and grow them back in 3–5 weeks.
Family Life: They live up to 5 years. Females lay 3–20 eggs a year, and the babies are completely independent from birth.
Hunting Style: They are “sit and wait” predators, meaning they let dinner come to them. They’re also a vital food source for local birds and snakes.

PCT Hikers Page
Although the PCT Association recommends hikers attempting to hike the entire PCT Trail northbound (2,650 miles from Mexican border to Canadian border) NOT start until mid-late April, inevitably, we will start to see PCT hikers coming through Idyllwild. About 50 hikers a day usually start the trail at the border heading north.
